Becoming an Instructor
The motorcycle training industry
is governed and regulated by the Driving
Standards Agency (DSA). There are
strict rules associated with motorcycle
training and to become an instructor
you must meet the following basic
criteria.
· Be over 21 years old
· Hold an unrestricted motorcycle
licence for over 3 years
· Have less than 6 penalty
points
· Be deemed to be a fit and
proper person to be an instructor

The 3 stages of qualification
There are 3 levels of instructor
and two tests or assessments to pass
to become fully qualified, which are
simplified below.
Down trained
This is the first step for many instructors,
there is no exam to pass for this
level. You will be trained and assessed
by a qualified instructor and then
licensed to teach Compulsory Basic
Training (CBT) only. Even though there
are no tests for this level, you would
still be subject to internal supervision
by the school that licence's you,
along with assessment by visiting
DSA examiners.
Cardington assessed
To reach this level you will have
to pass a tough, two day assessment
at the DSA training establishment
in Cardington, Bedfordshire. Here
you will have to prove your character
and skills as an instructor along
with your ability to supervise and
train other instructors. The DSA frequently
modify the assessment to defend and
improve the standard of instruction
throughout the industry and future
planned changes including charging
up to £650 by the DSA for this
qualification.
DAS qualified
Becoming DAS qualified means a further
trip to Cardington and the final,
half day assessment on your ability
to instruct on large bikes. Once this
assessment has been passed, you would
be fully qualified and able to operate
your own training school, providing
instruction to test standard.
Advantage instructor training
Within the industry there are many
"instructor schools" that
charge anything up to £1500
to teach would-be instructors how
to pass the Cardington exams. The
poor standard of potential instructors
submitted by many of these places
contributes to the justifiably low
pass rate at Cardington. The biggest
problem for the industry is instructors
that have passed the exams and are
"qualified" but have little
or no experience at all of teaching.
Remember the old saying "a fool
and his money are easily parted".
BUYER BEWARE!!

At Advantage we have no intention
of or interest in boosting our profits
